پیش از آن نیز در سریالها و فیلمهای ساخته شده در صداوسیما چهره شخصیتهای بزرگی چون حضرت مریم (س)، حضرت عیسی (ع)، حضرت یوسف و یعقوب پیامبر (ع) در تلویزیون به نمایش گذاشته شده بود، اما هرچه به زمان پخش صحنههای مربوط به حضور حضرت ابوالفضل نزدیکتر میشدیم، بر شدت نظرات مخالف افزوده میشد تا آنکه چند تن از مراجع تقلید مخالفت صریح خود را با این قضیه اعلام کردند و قضیه نمایش آن سکانسها به کل منتفی شد.
با حذف صحنههای حضور و نمایش چهره حضرت ابوالفضل عباس، کاوه فتوحی نابازیگری که توسط تیم سازنده مختارنامه کشف شده بود و برای تماشاگران تلویزیون چهرهای ناشناخته به شمار میرفت، نتوانست شاهد اولین حضور خود در قاب تلویزیون باشد. در صورتی که نمایش آن صحنهها ممکن بود سرنوشت فتوحی را همچون مصطفی زمانی در سریال یوسف پیامبر تغییر دهد. اما اکنون صحنه شهادت حضرت عباس که از نسخهای به غیر از نسخه نهایی سریال استخراج شده است، بر روی اینترنت قرار گرفته است.
با توجه به اینکه انتشار این صحنهها با دهه اول ماه محرم مصادف گشته با استقبال کاربران اینترنت روبهرو شده به خصوص نمایش چگونگی شهادت آن حضرت که جزو حزن انگیزترین وقایع روز عاشورا به شمار میرود.
طبق اخباری که در رسانهها منتشر شده است، در فیلم سینمایی روز رستاخیز ساخته احمدرضا درویش که خیلیها منتظر اکران آن هستند، چهره حضرت عباس، حضرت قاسم و حضرت علی اکبر(ع) به تصویر کشیده شده است. با آنکه عوامل سازنده روز رستاخیز سعی میکنند حساسیتی را در این زمینه برانگیخته نکنند تا بر اثر فشارهای احتمالی فیلم دچار جرح و تعدیل نشود، اما اگر این صحنهها بتوانند از ممیزیهای پیش از اکران عبور کنند در نوع خود تابوشکنی بزرگی خواهد بود. نمایش صحنههای حذف شده مختار نامه میتواند پیشزمینه خوبی برای سنجش آمادگی و مقبولیت نمایش چهره حضرت عباس باشد.
